Thai student wins Student Academy Awards in the US

BANGKOK (NNT) – Director and designer Varathit Uthaisri, an MFA student in Design and Technology at Parsons the New York School for Design, won the 37th Student Academy Award in the Alternative category for his thesis project, Surface: Film from Below.

The award ceremony was held on Saturday, June 12, at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater located in Los Angeles, USA. Mr Varathit was awarded a Gold medal and a 5,000 USD cash prize.

Mr Varathit was the second Thai student after Tatchapon Lertwirojkul, who won an award in the Animation category in 2008. Mr Tatchapol currently works with Sony Pictures Animation in the US. He was part of the production team who produced an animated film, "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” which was released in theaters in early 2010.
