PRE- & POST-DOC FELLOWSHIPS AT THE HARVARD ACADEMY FOR INTERNATIONAL & AREA STUDIES

The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies is dedicated to increasing our knowledge of the culture, history, and institutions of the world's major regions and countries. The Academy Scholars Program identifies and supports outstanding scholars at the start of their careers whose work combines disciplinary excellence in the social sciences (including history and law) with a command of the language, history, or culture of non-Western countries or regions. Their scholarship may elucidate domestic, comparative, or transnational issues, past or present.

Academy Scholars are appointed for 2 years by the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies and are provided time, guidance, and access to Harvard facilities. They receive substantial financial and research assistance to undertake sustained projects of research and/or acquire accessory training in their chosen fields and areas. The Senior Scholars, a distinguished group of senior Harvard faculty members, act as mentors to the Academy Scholars to help them achieve their intellectual potential.

The competition for these awards is open only to recent Ph.D. (or comparable professional school degree) recipients and doctoral candidates. Those still pursuing a Ph.D. should have completed their routine training and be well along in the writing of their theses before becoming Scholars; those in possession of a Ph.D. longer than 3
years are ineligible. Each year four to five Academy Scholars are named for two-year appointments. Scholars are expected to reside in the Cambridge/Boston area for the duration of their appointments unless traveling for pre-approved research purposes.

Post-doctoral Scholars will receive an annual stipend of $48,000, and pre-doctoral Scholars will receive an annual stipend of $28,000. This stipend is supplemented by funding for conference and research travel, research assistants, and health insurance coverage. Some teaching is permitted but not required. Applications are welcome from qualified persons without regard to nationality, gender, or race.

The Wilson Center in Washington D.C. awards approximately 20-25 residential fellowships annually
to individuals with outstanding project proposals in a broad range of the social sciences and humanities on national and/or international issues. Topics and scholarship should relate to key public policy challenges or provide the historical and/or cultural framework to illuminate policy issues of contemporary importance.

Eligibility

- Citizens or permanent residents from any country (foreign nationals
must be able to hold a valid passport and obtain a J1 Visa)
- Men and women with outstanding capabilities and experience from a
wide variety of -backgrounds (including government, the corporate
world, professions, and academia)
- Academic candidates holding a Ph.D. (Ph.D. must be received by the
application deadline of October 1)
- Academic candidates demonstrating scholarly achievement by
publications beyond their doctoral dissertations
- Practitioners or policymakers with an equivalent level of
professional achievement

The University of Pittsburgh School of Arts and Sciences Announces a
New Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for 2011
For the first time, the University of Pittsburgh School of Arts and
Sciences is offering up to eight postdoctoral fellowships in the
humanities and social sciences to begin in January 2011. These
inaugural fellowships are designed to attract excellent scholars from
outside the University of Pittsburgh and to offer junior scholars the
time, space, and financial support necessary to produce significant
scholarship early in their careers.

The Arts and Sciences Postdoctoral Fellowships are for one year and
are renewable for an additional year. Fellows will teach two courses
per year, complete scholarly work, and participate in the academic and
intellectual community of the School of Arts and Sciences and the
department or program with which they are affiliated. The fellowship
offers junior scholars the time, space, and financial support
necessary to produce significant scholarship early in their careers.
The annual stipend will be $45,000. Fellows will receive an annual
research fund of $3,500 and a one-time reimbursement of up to $1,500
for moving expenses.

Eligibility:
We invite applications from qualified candidates in the humanities and
social sciences who have received the PhD from outside of the
University of Pittsburgh between December 1, 2007 and November 30,
2010. Applicants who do not have the PhD in hand at the time of
application must provide a letter from the Department Chair or the
Advisor stating that the PhD degree will be conferred before the term
of the fellowship begins.

Guidelines:
Postdoctoral education is an important facet of research and
scholarship at the University of Pittsburgh, and the University has
developed a comprehensive set of guidelines for postdoctoral fellows
and the faculty, departments, and programs who work with them.

Application Requirements and Procedure

Applicants should submit the following materials:

1. An application form (available at www.as.pitt.edu/postdoc)
2. Curriculum vitae
3. Detailed statement of current research interests (1,000 words)
that clearly outlines the goals of the research you will undertake
during the term of the fellowship.
4. One writing sample no longer than 20 pages.
5. A copy of the Dissertation Table of Contents
6. A two-page statement of teaching interests and one or two course
proposals (subject area, brief syllabus, proposed methods) for a
15-week course directed towards advanced undergraduates or graduate
students.
7. Three letters of recommendation. (NOTE: Letter writers should
e-mail their recommendations directly to postdoc@as.pitt.edu , using
the applicant's name and the word, "Postdoc Recommendation" in the
e-mail subject line.

Application Deadline and Notification of Awards
All application materials-including letters of recommendation- must be
submitted electronically before June 1, 2010. Only fully completed
formal applications will be considered. It is your responsibility to
ensure that all documentation is complete and that referees submit
their letters of recommendation to postdoc@as.pitt.edu by the closing
date. Awards will be announced in July 2010.

PROGRAM IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY (STEP) AT PRINCETON UNIVERSITY'S WOODROW WILSON SCHOOL

The Program in Science, Technology and Environmental Policy (STEP) at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs (Michael Oppenheimer, Director) announces its 2010-2011 Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. STEP will award one-year research positions (with the possibility of renewal for a second year) to
eligible, talented researchers. These awards are designed to promote basic policy-relevant research under the supervision of one or more STEP faculty members. STEP faculty are offering fellowship opportunities in the
following areas of interest:

- David Wilcove: (1)conservation of migratory animals (2) impacts of logging and agriculture on biodiversity in Southeast Asia

- Michael Oppenheimer: (1) modeling the role of learning in decisions where structural model error is a key concern. This work will be coordinated with ongoing case studies of actual scientific learning coupled to policy decisions. (2) analysis of paleoclimate proxies for sea level, ice extent, and temperature to improve the use of analogs in forecasting future sea level rise. This project focuses particularly, but not exclusively, on proxies from the Last Interglacial.

- Denise Mauzerall: research interactions between air pollution and climate change including chemical transport and climate modeling, analysis of potential co-benefits and technical and policy options for mitigation.

Essential Qualifications: The Postdoctoral Fellows Program is open to all regardless of citizenship, but requires a completed doctorate and does not support work towards the completion of a degree. STEP fellows will be

Two-Year Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships at Cornell University

The Society for the Humanities will sponsor two postdoctoral teaching-research fellowships in the humanities, each awarded for the two-year period beginning July 2010. Each fellowship offers a stipend of $45,000/year. While in residence at Cornell, Mellon Fellows hold department affiliations and have limited teaching duties and the opportunity for scholarly work. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships are available in two areas of specialization. The Department of English invites applications from those working on transatlantic literature in English in the 18th and 19th century. Topics of study may include, but are not limited to, colonialism, slavery, tourism, translation, war and diplomacy, sea and trade narratives, immigration, cosmopolitanism, and  a multinational approach eo the development of literary genres. Harvard University Center for the Environment- Environmental Fellows program

The Harvard University Center for the Environment created the Environmental Fellows program to enable recent doctorate recipients to use and expand Harvard's extraordinary resources to tackle complex environmental problems. The Environmental Fellows work for two years with Harvard faculty members in any school or department to create new knowledge while also strengthening connections across the University's academic disciplines. Environmental Fellows may include people with degrees in the sciences, social sciences, law, government, public policy, public health, medicine, design, and the full array of humanities.

The award: The fellowship will provide an annual stipend of $54,000 plus health insurance, a $2,500 allowance for travel and professional expenses, and other employee benefits. Environmental Fellows will begin work in September 2010.

Postdoctoral Position in Theoretical Chemical Physics: WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY

Wake Forest, located in Winston-Salem, NC, provides the intimacy and

institutions. A postdoctoral position in THEORETICAL CHEMICAL PHYSICS is available with Professor A. Salam at Wake Forest University. The successful
candidate will develop and apply methods for the investigation of
radiation-molecule and molecule-molecule interactions.

Current projects include:
i) The use of analytical time-dependent perturbation theory,
rotating-wave approximation, and exact numerical techniques within
semi-classical radiation theory to study single- and multi-photon
absorption in chiral molecules and aspects of its related coherent
control.
ii) The development and application of the theory of molecular quantum
electrodynamics to multi-photon absorption and emission processes,
optical activity and chiroptical phenomena, nonlinear and quantum
optics, and retarded intermolecular forces.

Applicants must have a strong background in theoretical chemistry
and/or atomic, molecular and optical physics. Experience with
scientific programming using Fortran and/or C/C++, and in the use of
electronic structure software packages is desirable, though not
essential. The initial appointment is for one year with possible
extension dependent upon satisfactory performance and availability of
funds.

Insights from a Thai researcher at Stanford University

Dr Wibool Piyawattanametha is currently working at Stanford University's Department of Electrical Engineering and Pediatrics. Having worked for five years in the US, Dr Wibool, a researcher at the National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre (Nectec)'s Nanoelectronics & MEMS Laboratory, is now the only Thai credited with pioneering work in designing the cancer diagnosis with a novel Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS)- based optical imaging system.

Dr Wibool Piyawattanametha works with the MEMS scanner-based optical imaging instrument he developed. Behind him is an image of medulloblastoma cancer (a type of brain cancer) captured from the miniature microscope.

Points to note from his recent article in The Bangkok Post:

...the Thai government or organisations who offer grants are favourable to those who live in Thailand or who are at senior level or professor rather than the young generation. This is contrary to the US, where grants are offered to new graduates if they have a good idea, which is why there are frequently new innovations and novel research coming out of the States.

"As long as there is no long-term plan for grant consideration, we will not see Thailand achieve its potential. Manpower is a critical factor to boost us to the world class level," he said.
